Azerbaijan marks State Sovereignty Day on September 20, commemorating the restoration of the country’s sovereignty following the successful completion of local anti-terrorism measures in Karabakh in 2023.
On September 19, 2024, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a corresponding order establishing the day.
The establishment of State Sovereignty Day is linked to the local anti-terrorism measures carried out by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces in Karabakh on September 19, 2023.
Over the course of 23 hours and 43 minutes, precision weapons were used to disable forward and deep positions of Armenian armed forces units, permanent firing points, as well as military equipment and other military facilities. As a result, Armenian separatists were forced to raise the “white flag.”
On September 20, 2023, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev addressed the nation and announced that the country’s sovereignty had been restored following the successful completion of the anti-terrorism measures.
The Armenian army, which had been illegally stationed on Azerbaijani territory, was fully disarmed and withdrawn from the country. The illegal separatist junta regime in Karabakh was dismantled. In addition, the main leaders of the separatists were arrested as a result of operations conducted by Azerbaijani special services and law enforcement agencies.
Thus, state sovereignty and the constitutional order were restored throughout the entire territory of Azerbaijan.
