The super tanker EL GAIA (IMO 9325336), which was attempting to pass through a restricted area in the southern part of the Strait of Hormuz, struck a sea mine, according to a statement by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).


A fire broke out aboard the vessel. “Attempts to contain the fire were unsuccessful,” the statement said.


The IRGC stressed that the Strait of Hormuz is closed and remains under its intelligence surveillance.
