The newly appointed Secretary-General of the Permanent Secretariat of the TRACECA Intergovernmental Commission, Jasurbek Choriev, has described Azerbaijan as the key transit hub of the Middle Corridor, stressing that the route could not function without the country’s infrastructure and logistics network.

Speaking to journalists in Astana after the 18th meeting of the TRACECA Intergovernmental Commission, Choriev said Azerbaijan plays a central role in the development of the strategically important trade corridor linking Asia and Europe, Caliber.Az reports via local media

“Azerbaijan has been and will remain a key player in the Middle Corridor,” Choriev stated. “All the main flows pass through Azerbaijan. We are seeing large-scale investment in infrastructure and the development of logistics.”

Choriev, who also serves as Uzbekistan’s deputy transport minister, noted that the significance of the Middle Corridor for Uzbekistan has increased amid shifts in global supply chains and the evolving geopolitical environment.

“For Uzbekistan, TRACECA and the Middle Corridor are of key importance. Today, our main focus is precisely on this route,” he said.

According to Choriev, around 4.5 million tonnes of cargo were transported via the corridor in 2024, while freight volumes surpassed 5 million tonnes by the end of 2025.

He added that international forecasts, including those of the World Bank, indicate continued growth in cargo traffic along the route.

The TRACECA chief said the countries participating in the corridor are prioritising the modernisation of transport infrastructure, digitalisation and the harmonisation of customs procedures to improve efficiency and connectivity.

He also highlighted the growing role of aviation in regional logistics, noting that airports are increasingly being developed alongside seaports and dry ports to accelerate cargo deliveries.
