Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he intends to introduce two government bills that would allow citizenship to be revoked for those who slander Israeli soldiers and increase the penalty for slandering the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) twentyfold.
“We will hit them in their pockets and also in their citizenship, because their place is not among us,” he said in a video posted to X, adding that another law would raise “the defamation damages they can be sued for twentyfold.”
According to Netanyahu, the move was prompted by cases that had caused “enormous damage” to Israel and the IDF.
He made the remarks in the context of the public debate surrounding NAZA, a documentary by Israeli filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor that received the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. The film, based on anonymous testimonies, addresses the mass killing of civilians in Gaza.
