Italy and UN-Habitat have launched a new platform aimed at advancing the localisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), an initiative presented during the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku.

Speaking at the event titled “Frameworks for the Localisation of National SDGs,” Italy’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Luca Di Gianfrancesco, said the initiative represents a broader effort to enhance governance mechanisms at multiple levels.

According to the ambassador, the platform builds on cooperation between Italy and UN-Habitat, as well as Italy’s broader engagement with Africa under the “Mattei Plan.”

“The adaptation of the SDGs to the national level is of great importance for global goals. In this context, Italy and UN-Habitat, as well as within the framework of the Italian government’s partnership with Africa (‘Mattei Plan’), have launched the SDG Localisation Partnership Platform. Its goal is to contribute to the central role of SDG localisation as a driver of systemic transformation,” he said.

The initiative is designed to strengthen the implementation of SDGs by embedding them into national and local governance frameworks, positioning localisation as a key mechanism for achieving systemic change.

Di Gianfrancesco also underlined Italy’s intention to expand international cooperation on the major themes discussed at WUF13, signalling continued engagement in global urban development and sustainability efforts.
