Italy has decided to extend for another 15 days its suspension of the European Union’s border-free Schengen arrangements with Spain, the Italian Interior Ministry said.
The ministry said the decision was taken because "significant risks to internal security persist, alongside a potential threat linked to possible terrorist infiltration," Reuters reports.
Italy initially suspended the Schengen arrangements with Spain on July 31 following a mass influx of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from neighbouring Morocco.
The extension means border controls between Italy and Spain will remain in place as authorities continue to assess potential security risks.
