Around 460 companies could go bankrupt if the authorities fail to restart the Petrotel oil refinery, Bogdan Hossu, Head of Cartel Alfa, Romania’s national trade union confederation, has warned.

Petrotel belongs to Russian energy corporation Lukoil, which is under Western sanctions, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

The refinery was shut down for maintenance in October 2025 and later came under US sanctions, effectively ceasing operations.

US Department of the Treasury and the UK placed full sanctions on Lukoil in October 2025 to restrict Russia's energy revenue during the war in Ukraine.
