Residents of Russia’s Taganrog have complained of heavy smoke and a strong smell of burning that have persisted since a drone attack on the city on September 12, while a fire reportedly remains unextinguished for a fourth consecutive day.
People in the city noted that the area is still covered in smoke from the blaze, with a strong smell of burning lingering in the air. Local authorities have added that breathing the air is safe.
“It’s already the fourth day that the store has been burning, and all the stench, chemicals and combustion products are going straight into the city! In one district, the entire water supply was cut off for firefighting, but it isn’t helping. Spread the word! We’re going to have everyone here getting cancer soon,” residents said.
On September 15, Taganrog was again subjected to a missile attack, and a state of emergency was declared in the city. Taganrog Mayor Svetlana Kambulova reported three separate fire sites, including a damaged Ozon warehouse and warehouses belonging to agricultural enterprises.
The missile attack also damaged the glazing of five apartment buildings and three private houses. Public transport services in Taganrog were temporarily restricted.
Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case on terrorism charges.
