Clashes broke out between protesters and law enforcement officers during a farmers’ demonstration in Bucharest, Romania, with police using tear gas, according to Digi24.
On September 15, livestock farmers began gathering in Bucharest’s Victory Square to voice their grievances, including over restrictions on sheep and goat exports and unpaid compensation. The protesters later blocked traffic on a nearby street.
Clashes and the use of tear gas were subsequently reported.
The Bucharest Gendarmerie said some protesters had refused from the outset to surrender objects that could potentially be used to strike officers. Tear gas was deployed after the situation escalated, with some demonstrators throwing objects at law enforcement officers and knocking down barriers.
Three protesters reportedly required assistance after being exposed to tear gas and were treated at the scene. No law enforcement officers were injured.
Two participants involved in the incidents were taken to a police station.
