Chinese President Xi Jinping called for regular high-level communication with US President Donald Trump and expressed support for renewed US-Iran negotiations during talks at the White House on September 24.
According to China Central Television (CCTV), Xi said he was ready to maintain contact with Trump through various channels to help stabilise bilateral relations and promote a more stable, healthy and sustainable future for China-US ties.
Xi noted that the reciprocal visits by the two countries' leaders within less than six months were unprecedented in the history of China-US relations.
“I am ready to maintain communication with President Trump through various channels to jointly steer the large ship that is China-US relations and open up a more stable, healthy and sustainable future,” CCTV quoted Xi as saying.
The Chinese president also said Beijing hoped the United States and Iran would reach a comprehensive agreement, including on the Iranian nuclear issue, in order to help establish peace in the Middle East as soon as possible.
According to Xinhua, Xi said China supported the return of the United States and Iran to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and called on the two sides to resume dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible.
Xi also stressed the need to lay the foundations for more stable and sustainable China-US relations. He said the new positioning of the bilateral relationship around building constructive ties based on strategic stability reflected the current state of China-US relations while also representing hopes for their future development.
“Both sides should turn these aspirations into reality and lay the foundation for a more stable, healthy and sustainable future for China-US relations,” Xi said, according to Xinhua.
