Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for “healthy” competition between China and the United States, stressing that the two countries share the “capability and responsibility” to ensure artificial intelligence is managed for the benefit of humanity.
Xi made the remarks during a White House summit with US President Donald Trump on September 24, as the leaders discussed a range of sensitive issues, including artificial intelligence, Taiwan and the US-China trade truce.
Following a formal welcome at the White House, Trump praised the “truly great friendship” between the two leaders and highlighted the “common interests” shared by their countries.
Xi said he had a “personal rapport” with Trump and emphasized the need for the two presidents to “seek common ground.”
“Our competition should be a healthy one. Not a wrestle in which one wins and one loses,” Xi said.
Turning to artificial intelligence, Xi said the two countries had a shared responsibility to ensure the technology is used constructively.
“We have both the capability and responsibility to manage AI for good,” he said.
Xi also called for fair treatment of Chinese companies operating in the United States.
“We hope Chinese companies are treated fairly here in the United States,” he said in his opening remarks.
Trump is later scheduled to host Xi for a state dinner attended by prominent US business leaders, including Elon Musk, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
