Eighteen people accused of involvement in the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse have been extradited to the United States, Haitian authorities and the country’s Justice Ministry said.
The defendants will stand trial in Florida, where a case involving an alleged conspiracy to plan and carry out the assassination is being heard, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
US federal prosecutor Jason Quiñones described the extradition as an important step in the investigation. A total of 30 people have been charged in the case.
Jovenel Moïse was killed on July 7, 2021, at his residence in Port-au-Prince. His death was followed by a deep political and institutional crisis in Haiti, amid which armed gangs significantly expanded their influence.
