Powerful explosions at a Syrian army site near the town of al-Eis, south of Aleppo, injured at least four people early on September 21, Syrian state media reported.
The blasts occurred at a weapons depot belonging to the Syrian Ministry of Defence, according to the state-run SANA news agency. The cause of the explosions was not immediately known.
Faisal Mohammad Ali, head of civil defence operations in Aleppo, told SANA that rescue teams had evacuated four injured people from the site.
A series of explosions continued after the initial blast, according to Al Jazeera correspondent Obaida Hitto, reporting from Aleppo. The explosions could be heard several kilometres from the site, while ambulances and fire engines were seen heading towards the area.
Aleppo Governor Azzam al-Gharib urged residents to remain indoors, saying that hospitals, ambulance services and emergency teams had been placed on full alert.
Aleppo’s Internal Security Command said roads leading to the site had been closed to protect civilians.
A resident of Aleppo’s Hamdaniyeh neighbourhood told AFP that a “huge explosion” had shaken the area. From the roof of the building, the resident said, large flames could be seen in the distance.
The incident comes amid a series of deadly explosions at military and weapons facilities in Syria in recent weeks.
On September 18, an explosion of unknown origin at a military site in the eastern province of Deir Az Zor killed 11 people.
Earlier in September, an explosion at a weapons depot belonging to the Defence Ministry in northwestern Idlib province killed 14 people and injured 11. Five people were also killed in the same area more than a week earlier when a vehicle carrying munitions exploded.
Syria has been recovering from more than a decade of civil war following the fall of longtime President Bashar al-Assad in late 2024, with weapons stockpiles and military facilities remaining across the country.
