U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly criticised NATO, declaring that the United States does not need the alliance and expressing deep disappointment in its members’ support.

Speaking at a press conference, Trump stated, “I have to tell you, I'm very disappointed in NATO [...] NATO is a paper tiger. NATO is us. And when we needed them, and we didn't need them, by the way. We didn't need them, obviously, because they haven't helped at all. Just the opposite.”

The president emphasised his frustration that NATO member states did not assist the United States in its operation against Iran, calling the lack of support “a mark on NATO that will never disappear.”
