Armenia cannot be expelled from the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), as there is no mechanism for such a move, Armenian National Assembly Speaker Ruben Rubinyan said.
The remarks came after opposition lawmaker Agnesa Khamoyan asked Deputy Economy Minister Narek Hovakimyan what would happen to Armenia’s economy if the country were to leave or be expelled from the EAEU, Caliber.Az reports via Armenian media.
During Hovakimyan’s response, Rubinyan intervened, explaining that the EAEU’s legal framework does not provide for a mechanism to expel a member state such as Armenia.
Tensions between Armenia and the EAEU have intensified in 2026 amid Yerevan’s deepening ties with the European Union, including a 2025 law launching the EU accession process.
In May 2026, the leaders of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan issued a joint statement at an EAEU summit urging Armenia to hold a referendum choosing between the EAEU and the EU, while indicating that Armenia’s continued membership could be reviewed later in the year over perceived risks to the bloc’s economic security.
Armenian officials, including Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, have repeatedly stated that the country remains committed to constructive participation in the EAEU, has not violated its obligations or notified its partners of any intention to withdraw.
