BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 3. Iran's Foreign
Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei has indirectly indicated that
talks reportedly scheduled between Iran and the United States for
today will not take place.
Speaking at a press conference in Tehran on August 3, Baghaei
said Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi would travel to
Iraq today for a personal visit, while the remaining members of
Iran's negotiating team are still in the country.
Commenting on reports that China could act as a mediator between
Iran and the United States, Baghaei said that Pakistan is serving
as the mediator in Iran-US matters, while Qatar provides assistance
when needed.
"Iran has friendly and close cooperation relations with China.
China also shares Iran's concerns over the escalation of
confrontation and instability in the region. Therefore, the Chinese
side is using its capabilities to help prevent tensions. In this
regard, China, like several other countries, is providing
assistance. However, no new mediator has been added to the existing
mediators," he said.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said talks between the United
States and Iran would begin on Monday. Trump said he agreed to the
talks at the request of the authorities of Saudi Arabia, the United
Arab Emirates, and Qatar, as well as the Iranian side.
