BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 20. Italian energy
company Eni has launched start-up activities at the Meleiha Phase 2
(MP2) project in Egypt’s Western Desert, marking a milestone in the
development of a new gas hub within the Merged Meleiha concession,
the company said on October 20.

The project will increase gas processing capacity in the area
and support the growth of domestic natural gas production. The new
facility is designed to process up to 100 million standard cubic
feet of gas per day.

“Meleiha Phase 2” includes an integrated infrastructure system
comprising development wells, gathering systems, trunklines and a
dedicated gas export pipeline. The facilities will connect new
production to Egypt’s existing gas infrastructure, enabling the
“rapid monetization of resources and enhanced operational
efficiency,” according to Eni.

The company said the project confirms its role as “a strategic
partner of Egypt” and reaffirms its long-standing commitment to
contributing to the country’s energy security through the
development of the Western Desert’s resources.

The project is also expected to increase natural gas
availability on the domestic market. Eni said it had been developed
in accordance with the “highest standards of operational
excellence, safety and environmental sustainability.”

Eni has been present in Egypt since 1954 and is currently the
country’s leading energy producer. Its equity hydrocarbon
production in Egypt averaged approximately 242,000 barrels of oil
equivalent per day in 2025.

Through its subsidiaries and joint ventures, Eni operates across
the energy value chain, with exploration, development and
production activities in the Western Desert, the Gulf of Suez, the
Nile Delta and the Eastern Mediterranean.
