Georgia remains in contact with the United States and is optimistic about restoring the two countries' strategic partnership, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told reporters, as cited by TASS.
“We remain optimistic that the strategic partnership between Georgia and the United States will be restored. We are maintaining communication with our American partners. We hope to see reciprocal steps that will ultimately ensure the restoration of the strategic partnership. This is our goal, and we are patiently waiting for corresponding steps from the American side,” Kobakhidze said.
Relations between Tbilisi and Washington deteriorated significantly in 2024 after Georgia adopted its foreign agents law. Following the Georgian prime minister's announcement on November 28, 2024, that the country would freeze the process of opening EU accession talks, the United States suspended its strategic partnership with Georgia.
Even before Donald Trump was elected US president, the Georgian authorities had repeatedly expressed hope that a change of administration in Washington would lead to a reset in bilateral relations. Georgian officials have also consistently said they are awaiting reciprocal steps from the United States, while contacts between the two sides have intensified in recent months.
