French President Emmanuel Macron reacted with humour after a light exchange at a White House state dinner involving King Charles III and historical language jokes.

During his remarks at the dinner, King Charles referenced a recent comment by President Donald Trump, who said that “if it were not for the United States, European countries would be speaking German.” The King then added a playful remark: “Dare I say, if it wasn't for us, you’d be speaking French.”

Macron responded to the moment on X, posting: “That would be chic!”

The Élysée Palace also joined in the exchange, writing: “If ever… See you at the next Francophonie summit!”
