US military forces destroyed two of their own C-130 transport aircraft in Iran while carrying out a rescue mission for the pilot of a previously downed F-15E, a source familiar with the operation said.

The aircraft were destroyed on the ground. It was not specified how the C-130s became trapped during the rescue, but their destruction was deemed necessary, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The MC-130J is a specially equipped aircraft used for covert infiltration and troop extraction from enemy territory, the report added.
