An escalation of the war between the US-Israeli alliance and Iran would have disastrous consequences not just for the warring nations but also for the global economy, a Middle East specialist warned.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Amin Saikal, a professor emeritus at the Australian National University, said that such an expansion of the war “is going to be hell for the whole region.”

“Both sides are determined to achieve their objectives. But I do not think the continuation of the war is really an answer to the problem,” Saikal explained.

“There has to be some kind of negotiated settlement. But at this stage, the door for a diplomatic solution seems to be very narrow, unless President Trump decides that this conflict has caused so much problem for him domestically, as well as internationally, therefore it is really time to reach some compromise with the Iranians,” he added.
