A small aircraft crashed in the seaside city of Capão da Canoa in Brazil’s southern state of Rio Grande do Sul on Friday, April 3, killing four people.

According to fire authorities, cited by foreign media, the victims included the pilot, the co-pilot, and two businesspeople.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:40 a.m. local time when the aircraft, which was en route to Ibitinga in the state of São Paulo, went down into a closed restaurant located in a residential area.

Preliminary reports cited by local outlet Radio Gaúcha indicated that the single-engine plane had been flying at low altitude before it began losing height and ultimately crashed.

Security camera footage from the city captured the moment of impact, followed by an explosion. Images shared by residents and broadcast by RBS TV showed a large fireball rising into the air at the crash site.

Nearby homes sustained damage, but residents were evacuated, and no additional injuries were reported.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

Brazil’s civil aviation regulator identified the aircraft as a Piper JetPROP DLX.
