US President Donald Trump described Cuba as a “failed state” and predicted the fall of its communist government during his address to the UN General Assembly, as he called for greater US involvement in the region, Reuters reports.
“My administration is also seeking a fundamental change in the situation in Cuba, where the communist regime is under great pressure-the biggest pressure they've ever been under. It's an absolutely failed State, it's failing like never before, and it will fall,” Trump said.
“Communism will never be coming to America, but freedom will be coming to Cuba.”
The Cuban delegation walked out of the General Assembly hall during Trump’s remarks, according to multiple reports.
The US has maintained a trade embargo against Cuba for more than six decades, while the Trump administration has intensified pressure on the communist-led government. Washington has also pursued a broader policy of increased involvement in the region.
Trump has previously described Cuba as a failed state, including in June, when he said the United States had plans for the island and would “take care” of the country.
US-Cuban relations have remained strained for decades, dating back to Fidel Castro’s 1959 revolution. Trump has also maintained strong support among hardline Cuban-American groups in Florida that have long advocated political change on the island.
