The conflict in Ukraine is the most difficult international crisis to resolve, US Vice President JD Vance has said, conveying President Donald Trump’s view.
Speaking to journalists at Joint Base Andrews near Washington before departing on a working trip to North Carolina, Vance expressed hope for progress following the meeting between Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy, scheduled for September 22, Caliber.Az reports.
“I’m always optimistic that we are going to make progress. <…> This thing has been tough to solve. No doubt about it. But I’d rather work for a president who is energetically trying to solve the problem, who already keeps on trying to solve it. Do I think it will get resolved eventually? Yes, it’s a question of time,” he added.
The meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump is scheduled to take place in New York, the US.
Zelenskyy claims Ukraine is ready for de-escalation, but that it must be mutual.
In a post on X, he stated that Ukraine’s energy sector, critical infrastructure and food export supplies must cease to be targets for Russia, and this will lead to corresponding de-escalation steps.
“Indeed, this Russian war against Ukraine and against common sense must be ended,” he wrote.
He further stated that the war causes more problems every new week, let alone every new year.
“Solutions are possible. We are ready to work on this, and we will discuss it with our partners on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York,” the Ukrainian leader added.
