An Iraqi national has been arrested in eastern Germany on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack, the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office said.
The man was detained by officers from the Federal Police and the Federal Criminal Police Office in the Barnim district of Brandenburg.
He is suspected of attempting to establish a terrorist organization, preparing a crime posing a threat to national security, and violating firearms laws.
Investigators believe the suspect supported the ideology of the Islamic State (ISIS). They allege that in spring 2025, he and several associates began planning terrorist attacks in Germany and acquired firearms for this purpose. He also surveilled a church in Bremen that he intended to target.
The suspect is expected to appear before an investigating judge, who will decide on his pre-trial detention.
