Two people were killed on Wednesday, August 26, when a gyrocopter crashed in Italy's northern Piedmont region, according to Italian news agency ANSA.


The crash occurred at around 11:30 a.m. local time near the Campiccioli dam in the municipality of Antrona Schieranco, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola.


The victims were a 60-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman.


Rescuers said the aircraft was a gyrocopter, also known as a gyroplane. Emergency services and an air ambulance helicopter were sent to the crash site.


The causes and circumstances of the accident remain under investigation.
