BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 4. The United Nations
General Assembly has adopted a resolution proposed by Uzbekistan
aimed at strengthening the role of national parliaments in
advancing social development and accelerating progress toward the
2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).


This was reflected in the statement by the Executive Committee
of the Commonwealth of Independent States.


Titled "Strengthening the Role of Parliaments in Accelerating
Social Development," the resolution was initiated by Uzbek
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and co-sponsored by 61 UN member
states representing all regions of the world, reflecting broad
international support for the initiative.


According to Uzbekistan's Permanent Mission to the United
Nations, the resolution was developed as a contribution to global
efforts to promote social development while reinforcing the
parliamentary dimension of international cooperation.


"The initiative was put forward by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev
as Uzbekistan's contribution to advancing the global social
development agenda and strengthening the parliamentary dimension of
international cooperation," Uzbekistan's Permanent Representative
to the UN Ulugbek Lapasov said during the General Assembly's
consideration of the resolution.


The document underscores the role of parliaments in accelerating
implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals by
strengthening national legislation, improving social protection
systems, reducing poverty, promoting decent work, expanding access
to quality education and fostering social inclusion.


It also highlights the importance of increasing the
participation of women and young people in parliamentary
activities, leveraging digital transformation to support social
development and expanding international cooperation, particularly
in support of developing countries.







The resolution welcomes the 150th Assembly of the
Inter-Parliamentary Union, held in Tashkent, and the adoption of
the Tashkent Declaration on Parliamentary Action for Social
Development and Social Justice.


In addition, it encourages UN member states to more actively
involve parliaments in implementing and monitoring the 2030 Agenda
for Sustainable Development, including through the preparation of
voluntary national reviews, parliamentary oversight of national
commitments and stronger engagement with civil society.


The resolution also calls for greater participation of
parliamentarians in major UN events and recommends strengthening
national statistical systems to improve the measurement and
evaluation of social development progress.


According to the executive committee, the adoption of the
resolution followed extensive diplomatic consultations led by the
country's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, including formal
negotiations and bilateral consultations that resulted in a
consensus-based text reflecting the interests of UN member
states.


The resolution marks another diplomatic initiative by Uzbekistan
to expand its role within the United Nations and promote
multilateral cooperation on sustainable development and global
governance.
