Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said no technical meetings with the United States are scheduled for this week, casting doubt on media reports that the two sides would hold talks in Qatar.
Speaking on the planned negotiations, Gharibabadi said consultations with Qatar were continuing but denied that technical discussions had been confirmed, Caliber.Az reports via Israeli media.
"Technical meetings are not planned for this week," he said. "Although consultations with Qatar continue as usual, the reports from some media outlets that technical talks between the sides will take place in Doha cannot be confirmed. The first round of technical talks will take place when the conditions are met."
His comments came after Axios, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that the United States and Iran had agreed to halt strikes against one another and planned to meet in Doha on June 30 to discuss disagreements over the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Axios journalist Barak Ravid, a senior U.S. official said the two sides had agreed to stop attacking each other and would seek to resolve tensions through talks in the Qatari capital.
One source cited by Axios also said the negotiations had originally been scheduled to take place in Switzerland, where discussions were expected to focus on Iran's nuclear program, before plans reportedly shifted to Doha.
