South Korean forces have detained a North Korean soldier who crossed the inter-Korean border, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).


The military said the North Korean serviceman was taken into custody on the night of June 22 after illegally crossing the border, Caliber.Az reports, citing Yonhap.


“The military secured one North Korean soldier in the central front Tuesday night and relevant authorities are currently investigating the details,” the South Korean military said in a statement.


No further details about the incident have been disclosed. According to preliminary assessments, the crossing may have been an attempt to defect from North Korea.
