Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili has said that Georgia does not see its participation in the European Union, which, in his words, is “Europe in name only.”
According to remarks reported by Caliber.Az citing Georgian media, Papuashvili delivered a sharp critique of the current direction of Europe, framing it as a broader historical and civilizational shift.
“Europe has had different faces. Before 1945, Europe also had a fascist face. Then that face changed, and Europe became similar to the Europe that is acceptable to us. Now we see that it is facing civilizational challenges. They are moving toward a civilizational abyss, distancing themselves from European ideals,” he said.
He argued that the European Union is increasingly diverging from the values that Georgia considers acceptable, suggesting that the bloc is undergoing a transformation that raises fundamental concerns for Tbilisi.
Papuashvili also criticised the European Parliament, claiming that it fosters a hostile environment toward the Georgian people.
“If they had their way, they would launch missiles at us, send in the army. And then locals would explain that this is for the sake of democracy,” he stated.
