Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) officers have detained a resident of the Seversky district in the Krasnodar region on suspicion of planning to bomb an energy facility in the region.


The FSB said the suspect, born in 2003, was arrested in Novorossiysk, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.


It alleged the Russian citizen had been recruited via WhatsApp by an officer of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU).


The man was reportedly instructed to place an improvised explosive device (IED) at an energy infrastructure facility.


Authorities stated that the suspect was detained while heading to the location where the device was allegedly to be hidden.


During the search, officers seized a high-explosive IED containing 2.5 kilograms of explosives, as well as a mobile phone allegedly used to communicate with his handler.


Criminal cases have been opened on charges including preparation for a terrorist attack, illegal trafficking of explosive materials, and treason.


According to the FSB, the suspect admitted guilt and is cooperating with investigators.
