Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs has stated that Russia is spreading false information.
“Russia is lying about Latvia allowing any country to use Latvian airspace and territory to launch attacks against Russia or any other country,” he wrote on X.
Earlier, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) had alleged that Ukraine plans to use Latvian territory as a launch point for drone attacks against Russia, a claim swiftly rejected by officials in Latvia.
In a statement, the SVR accused Latvia’s government of agreeing to host Ukrainian drone operations, saying: “The primitive Russophobia of Latvia’s current rulers proved stronger than their capacity for critical thinking or their sense of self-preservation,” the agency said.
The SVR also claimed Ukrainian drone units had already been deployed to five Latvian military bases and issued a warning referencing NATO deterrence, saying Latvia’s membership “will not protect the accomplices of terrorists from just retribution.”
Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže dismissed the allegations as disinformation. “Russia lies again,” Braže wrote in a post on X. “Latvia does NOT provide airspace for attacks on Russia. That has been explained several times to Russian representatives.”
