The United States and Bahrain have introduced a draft resolution at the UN Security Council calling on Iran to stop attacks and threats against maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
The initiative, reported by Caliber.Az citing the UAE Mission to the UN, has received backing from Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
The resolution comes in response to recent attacks on UAE territory and Tehran’s decision to establish a mechanism requiring foreign vessels to pay for passage through the strategic waterway.
The US Ambassador to the UN warned that “freedom of navigation and the stability of global trade” are under threat.
Iranian officials strongly rejected the proposal. The country’s foreign minister and its permanent representative to the UN described the resolution as “one-sided and deeply flawed,” and accused the United States of escalating regional tensions.
