The war between the United States and Iran has caused a “deep rift” between the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, Axios reports, citing sources.

According to officials in the US and the region, the Trump administration was slow to recognize the seriousness of the divide and ultimately chose not to intervene.

At the outset of the conflict, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Riyadh and Abu Dhabi that Washington would not take sides.

Unnamed senior officials have expressed concern that the two key Arab allies of the United States could become even more hostile toward each other once the war ends.
