Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has publicly defended President Tamás Sulyok following calls for his resignation by opposition leader Péter Magyar, whose party “Tisza” recently won the elections.

According to Iz.ru, Orbán announced his position on 21 April, stating that he had signed a petition in support of the head of state and published the initiative on Facebook.

“I have already signed it,” Orbán wrote, sharing the text of the petition backing President Sulyok.

The petition argues that Magyar’s call for the president’s resignation reflects an attempt to remove remaining institutional checks on power and achieve “full control” over all branches of government.

“A victory in elections does not give any party the right to arbitrarily dismantle constitutional safeguards,” the document states.

The authors of the petition also emphasise that President Sulyok represents constitutional order and national continuity, contrasting him with Magyar. According to them, the president does not use state authority as a political tool.
