A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of New Guinea, the island divided between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported on February 24, 2026.
The centre said the quake’s epicentre was located 215 kilometres west of the city of Jayapura, with a depth of 33 kilometres.
No information has yet been released regarding casualties or damage.
