A military pickup truck transporting ammunition exploded in the city of Bu-Kamal in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor province, leaving an unspecified number of dead and injured.

The cause of the explosion remains unknown, Caliber.Az cites a foreign media outlet.

Local authorities have not ruled out the possibility that ISIS militants operating in eastern Syria carried out a sabotage operation in Bu-Kamal.

Exact casualty figures have not yet been released.

The incident follows recent attacks in the region. On December 13, a joint Syrian-American patrol near Palmyra came under fire, resulting in the deaths of two U.S. soldiers and an American civilian translator. On December 14, four traffic police officers were killed during an ISIS raid in Idlib.
