Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said its navy had struck a Togo-flagged tanker that attempted to make what it described as an unauthorised passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
The tanker, identified as the Trend, was stopped after catching fire following the strike, Iranian state media reported. The IRGC Navy said the vessel had attempted to cross the strategic waterway illegally after being deceived and provoked.
“Last night, the offending tanker Trend, flying the flag of Togo, attempted to illegally pass through the Strait of Hormuz at the instigation and deception of the US military. It was hit and stopped after a fire broke out on it,” the IRGC Navy said, according to the report.
The IRGC Navy reiterated its warning that unauthorised attempts to pass through the Strait of Hormuz would be met with force.
“The IRGC Navy once again warns that illegal passage through the Strait of Hormuz will have no outcome other than the destruction of the offending vessel,” it said.
