Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has ordered authorities to step up efforts to curb crime in Tashkent, warning that public security is essential for attracting businesses and investment.
Speaking at a meeting on Tashkent’s socio-economic development, investment, employment and infrastructure in local mahallas, Mirziyoyev said entrepreneurs would not invest in areas where crime remained a concern, Uzbek media reports.
“Until we curb crime, we will not succeed in our endeavours, and entrepreneurs will not come here. Bear this in mind. Every entrepreneur and every company first studies a map of Uzbekistan to find out whether crime has been curbed or not… the Minister of the Interior must take this into account,” he said.
The president also called on officials to work harder to preserve peace and security and ensure that people can live freely and without fear.
“If even a single arrogant rich man appears, I will not forgive any of you. Let this be clear to all of you. There must be a state. Only then will we have unity and harmony, and people will trust us,” Mirziyoyev said.
The meeting also focused on making greater use of the economic potential of each district and mahalla, increasing investment and added value, and creating more high-paying jobs.
Mirziyoyev instructed each district governor to organise at least two major shopping centres or malls that could attract residents and tourists.
Tashkent Mayor Shavkat Umurzakov and the governors of the capital’s 12 districts were tasked with identifying specific locations, investors and funding sources by October 1.
“Tashkent must set an example for everyone in all areas,” Mirziyoyev said.
