Pakistan’s membership of the BRICS group could give a strong boost to its relations with India and international integration, Pakistan’s ambassador to Russia, Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, said.
Pakistan applied to join BRICS in 2023 and remains a candidate country. Islamabad hopes to use the grouping to strengthen economic ties in South and Central Asia.
Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in September, Tirmizi said almost all BRICS member states had supported Pakistan’s application, but India had yet to give its consent, according to Russian media.
Tirmizi said Pakistan had historically served as a link between South Asia, the Middle East and Central Asia. Pakistan and India are also both members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
