Six villagers have been arrested in India’s Uttar Pradesh state after a telecom technician was tied to a mobile tower during protests over a prolonged 5G network outage, police said.
The incident occurred in Hardauli village in Fatehpur district’s Bindki area. A video purportedly showing the technician, identified as Aditya Bhan Singh, tied to the tower and surrounded by villagers circulated on social media, PTI News reports.
Police reached the village on September 10 and rescued Singh, according to officials. Fatehpur Superintendent of Police Abhimanyu Manglik told PTI that Singh had travelled to the village to address a mobile network problem when some residents allegedly detained him and tied him to the tower.
The villagers were demanding that the 5G connectivity issue be resolved.
