Protests have erupted in several Syrian provinces following the authorities’ decision to raise prices for petroleum products, with demonstrators blocking several roads, including the M-5 international highway.
According to Syria TV, protests broke out in the cities of Aleppo, Idlib, Hasakah, Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor. The channel released footage showing large fires as protesters blocked roads and burned tires. In some cities, demonstrators also prevented fuel tankers from passing through.
Fuel prices in Syria are set by a special committee under the Ministry of Energy. On September 12, the committee raised prices for gasoline, gas and diesel, with fuel costs increasing by 25–40%.
