India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi showcased his country's growing deep-tech and innovation ecosystem on the world stage as he accompanied his fellow BRICS leaders on a visit to a major exposition presenting the country’s technological developments in New Delhi.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other BRICS leaders accompanied Modi during his visit to the Bharat Innovates Exposition on September 12, as the organizers reported.
The exposition was organized by the Ministry of Education in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs. It is a national programme aimed at serving as a global accelerator for innovations emerging from India’s higher education ecosystem.
The initiative seeks to promote long-term cooperation between India’s innovation ecosystem, including startups, higher education institutions, laboratories and research parks, and global stakeholders such as corporations, investors, incubators, universities, research institutes, governments and overseas alumni.
The BRICS Bharat Innovates (BBI) Exposition is the second major exposition showcasing India’s deep-tech startups in 2026, following the first edition of Bharat Innovates, held in Nice, France, from June 14 to 16.
The BBI featured 37 Indian deep-tech startups and ventures from the original cohort of 120 startups and ventures that participated in France, aligning with the theme of India’s BRICS Chairship, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”.
The exposition was held alongside the BRICS Business Forum on September 11, giving participating innovators an opportunity to connect with CEOs, investors, business leaders and industry representatives from BRICS member countries.
The event facilitated opportunities for business-to-business engagements, technology partnerships, investment discussions, business linkages and access to international markets.
The exposition also advances the BRICS Education Track priority of “Enhancing Research, Innovation and Start-up Ecosystems”, one of five priority areas identified under India’s BRICS Chairship in 2026.
The visit was followed by a gala dinner attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, among other dignitaries.
