Israeli security forces say they have intercepted an attempted weapons smuggling operation along the country’s eastern border, seizing 35 firearms and arresting two suspects.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said its surveillance personnel detected indications of preparations for a smuggling attempt. Soldiers, police officers and border police subsequently launched a joint operation and deployed ambushes in the area, Caliber.Az reports.

According to the IDF, two men from Jericho, both around 50 years old, were arrested during the operation.

Authorities said the seized weapons included more than 30 pistols and two M16 rifles, with the total number of firearms put at 35.

The suspects and the weapons were handed over to authorities for further investigation, the IDF said.
