Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (parliament) Sahiba Gafarova has highlighted the country’s efforts to advance its climate agenda while translating global commitments into concrete national policies and action.
She made the remarks at Columbia University while speaking on “Transforming Global Commitments into National Action: Parliament, Sustainable Development and Azerbaijan’s Climate Agenda,” noting that the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals depends on national policies, legislation and specific projects, according to state media.
The speaker stressed the importance of aligning global goals with national priorities and ensuring the sustainability of the results achieved. Gafarova also highlighted the role of parliaments in this process, noting that their legislative, budgetary and oversight functions enable the creation of favourable legal and institutional frameworks for implementing global commitments at the national level.
Addressing the interconnection between energy, climate and development, Gafarova emphasised that Azerbaijan’s priorities include maintaining the role of traditional energy resources, developing renewable energy sources and accelerating the energy transition.

She added that the transformation requires the combined efforts of the government, businesses, universities and civil society.
