Many Americans oppose the US administration’s push to accelerate the construction of artificial intelligence data centers across the country, Bloomberg reports, citing sources and public opinion polls.
AI advocates within the administration argue that the technology is essential to the growth of the US economy. However, further development of AI will require large-scale construction of data centers, fueling public discontent as the expansion is expected to drive up electricity prices and put additional strain on power grids.
Recent polling has shown that around seven out of 10 US voters would oppose the construction of an AI data center near their homes.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly made high-profile statements about the country’s achievements in AI and has strongly advocated for the construction of data centers, the agency noted.
In recent months, political strategists have warned members of the US administration that its stance on data centers risks eroding public support. The administration’s position has already created tensions with voters and could further weaken the Republicans’ standing ahead of the midterm elections to Congress.
