Azerbaijan’s experience in mine action and the subsequent reconstruction of its liberated territories could serve as an example for other countries, as this work lays the foundation for the long-term development of the entire region, Chairman of the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture Anar Guliyev said.
Speaking at a panel discussion during the 4th International Mine Action Conference, Guliyev highlighted the broader impact of mine action on regional development and future generations, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
“Mine action contributes to the sustainable development not only of an individual territory but of the entire region. One of the important questions is what contribution the lands cleared of mines will make in the future. After all, this lays the foundation for the health of future generations,” he noted.
The chairman of the State Committee emphasised the particular importance of spatial planning in the reconstruction of the territories. It determines where settlements should develop, how they should be connected to one another, and what infrastructure will ensure those connections.
In addition, spatial planning makes it possible to determine locations for public facilities and economic zones.
“This approach is further strengthened through cooperation with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). The availability of land affects the structure of settlements, determines development priorities and the sequence in which territories are made available for use,” Guliyev added.
