Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom is in talks with Egypt over the possible construction of two additional power units at the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev said.
Likhachev made the remarks following a meeting with Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Mostafa Esmat.
“Today we are beginning discussions on the second phase of a possible expansion of the plant by another two units, and we are also discussing the financial and economic model for the fifth and sixth units. If we reach a common position and understanding, we will report this to the leadership of our countries — to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and the Egyptian government, and likewise to the leadership of the Russian Federation,” Likhachev said.
He added that the delivery of nuclear fuel for the plant’s first power unit is scheduled for 2027, with the reactor expected to be connected to Egypt’s national power grid in 2028.
“The project is now at its most exciting stage, approaching its peak. Four power units are being constructed simultaneously. The first is the flagship unit, which we plan to connect to the grid in 2028,” Likhachev said.
The El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, Egypt’s first nuclear facility, is being built using Russian-designed technology. The project is considered the largest joint energy initiative between Russia and Egypt and is expected to significantly expand Egypt’s nuclear power generation capacity.
