The evacuation of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) compound in Jerusalem has begun, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated.

In February 2025, the PM ordered the immediate implementation of a law banning UNRWA’s activities in Israel, Caliber.Az reports, citing the PM’s office.

The measure had been approved by Israel’s parliament.

“Following my instructions and in order to implement the law that was passed, the evacuation of the UNRWA compound in Kafr Aqab in Jerusalem began today (August 25 – Ed.),” Netanyahu noted.

In May, US Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs Adam Boehler said UNRWA could potentially be replaced if a new system for delivering humanitarian aid to refugees in the Gaza Strip proved effective.
