Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev has criticised Armenia’s push to join the European Union, saying it is driven by the “schizoid ambitions” of the country’s current leadership.
Speaking to TASS, Medvedev said Armenia would never become an EU member but would damage its relations with Russia and other members of the Eurasian Economic Union in the process.
He described Armenia’s European ambitions as being linked to what he called the betrayal of national interests, money from George Soros and the persecution of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
“It is obvious that Armenia will never join the European Union, which is suffering from serious chronic ailments, but it will seriously damage its relations with Russia and other Eurasian Economic Union countries for a long time,” Medvedev said.
